Book Club

|
What is the purpose of the Book Club? Do you read only religious books? These two questions are usually asked by potential members. In answer to the first question, the Club is composed of a group of men and women who wish to exercise and improve their minds by reading a variey of good literature. Sounds boring? It's not. Through stories and poems we have seen how others have lived their lives and learned lessons for living our own. These books are not always, in the strictest sense, religious books. However, from them we can learn moral and spiritual lessons. Sometimes, as when we read Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, we even have a good laugh. For over 30 years, we have studied a wide variety of prose and poetry--everything from Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy to All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren. The works of C.S. Lewis occupied a large part of our time this year. Presently, we are reading Daisy Miller and Washington Square by Henry James. During his lifetime from 1843 to 1916, Henry James wrote 20 novels, 112 stories, and 12 plays. He is often cited as one of literature's great stylists; it has been said that his writing surrounds a subject and illuminates it with a flickering light, rather than pinning it down. These novels consider differences between American and European culture of the day. Other famous novels by Henry James include The Bostonians and The Turn of the Screw. Come join us every Tuesday Morning at 10:00 AM in the Narthex and read with us:
